Washing machine source of fire in The Hague

On the night of Monday to Tuesday, a great fire has raged in a reception centre of the Salvation Army at the Noordpolderkade in The Hague. The fire started in a washing machine and a lot of smoke was released. It is yet unknown what caused the fire in the washing machine, but it is often caused by overheating. This occurs when the electricity of your washing machine is not connected properly, or when too many devices are connected to a single distribution box. Due to the smoke and the size of the site, the fire department had to scale tot he signal “means fire”. Since late last week, employers and employees are arguing over a new collective labour agreement. Last Friday, employers’ organization OnderhoudNL had downturned the proposed ultimatum defined by the FNV, resulting in relay strikes. The CNV joined these actions later this week.

Opening hotline safety in construction

This Monday, Holland’s largest trade union FNV opened a hotline for construction safety issues. This was prompted by a shocking report that Inspection SZW had published about the rise of serious accidents in construction.

Recognise and report dangerous building jobs

The labour union and the inspections are teaming up: employees that spot dangerous situations at the construction site can now report it through various channels, such as e-mail, phone or app. To set the bar low, reporting dangerous situations can be done anonymously. The construction site will then be inspected.

Employers lack initiative

The FNV union states that the reason to intervene is that employers, contractors and subcontractors have not intervened. The construction sector has consistently ranked in the top three of most dangerous places to work in The Netherlands for years. The labour union decided to act now because it sees it as its task to maintain good working conditions.

Alarming numbers: serious accidents in dangerous building jobs increase

According to the data provided by the inspection, the number of serious accidents in construction in the first half of 2016 increased by 14% compared to last year. The number of fatal accidents even grew by over 50%. Chairman of UNETO-VNI Titia Siertsema says its time that a uniform qualification system for installers of boilers is introduced. The president is supported by ministers Blok and Schippers.

From multiple angles, the call for a national qualification system is heard for quite some time. The Dutch Safety Board published a report on accidents with carbon monoxide in boilers last year, in which the seriousness of the situation was confirmed. Organisations such as the Consumers Association, the Dutch Fire Department, Network Maintenance Netherlands and the Home Owners Associations agree with UNETO-VNI.

According to ministers Blok and Schippers, the problem can only be solved if all installation companies in The Netherlands work following heavy, clear regulations. Only then the safety of installations can be improved, so that the amount of carbon monoxide victims can be reduced. Moreover, UNETO-VNI wants to introduce a similar qualification system for electricity and water.

UNETO-VNI states that at this very moment, there are a lot of bunglers active in the installation market. The result is not restricted to dangerous situations, but also unfair competition. The government is currently discussing the regulations, but is yet unsure of its effectiveness.
