Tips for EV charger installation

 
Installing EV chargers requires solid preparation. Please bear these basic tips in mind:
 

• Choose whether you need a charging station for charging your electric car or perhaps a wallbox: if you can mount it directly on the wall
• Check the meter cupboard to see whether you have 1-phase or three-phase power: normally you need 3-phase power for your current or your next electric car. The latter is more powerful and therefore charges the car considerably faster. Do you have 1 phase power? Request an upgrade to 3-phase power from your energy supplier. This can usually be done online. There are costs associated with this and you have to take into account that it can take a few months before this adjustment is made in the meter cupboard. Extra connections will also be made in the meter cupboard, is there room for that?
• Determine where you want to place the EV charger. In principle, you must place the charging station on your own land. And you also have to take into account that the cable should not run over a sidewalk when you charge the car. If one of these two is the case, you must contact the municipality. But usually you have to have your own driveway. There are tiles with a built-in cable duct. Some municipalities want to cooperate in allowing the cable to run over the sidewalk. Check whether the location is reasonably easy to reach from the meter cupboard, for example via a crawl space, that can save a lot of work! After all, that cable has to come! So also determine the length that the cable will need. Also remember that from the ground, the cable should rise about five feet
• Choose the charging station or wallbox: 1-phase current or 3-phase current, capacity (22 kW is usually sufficient: the possibility of dynamic load balancing is useful because then the fuses blow less quickly, especially if you use 1-phase current)
• Install the EV charger and cable. You will have to make an extra group in the meter cupboard for the EV charger you connect. This is a job for which you should definitely have knowledge of electricity and installation! After all, you work with 3 times 230 volts and if you do something wrong in the meter cupboard, it can lead to life-threatening situations. Otherwise, call in an installer or electrician, who can arrange this safely
• Of course you can also outsource the EV charger installation completely. It may cost a few hundred euro but will save you a lot of effort, time and risk. An electrician usually executes an EV charger installation in less than a day and you know that it will be done properly and safely. You usually just need to find the supplier and upgrade to 3-phase power if needed. And the installer must have access to the meter cupboard and the crawl space.
